Cambridge City Hall officially opens
CAMBRIDGE, ON — Cambridge City Hall officially
opened with a VIP ceremony on Thursday, June 5. The Honourable John
Gerretsen, Ontario Minister of Environment joined Mayor Craig, members of
Cambridge City Council, city staff, local dignitaries and business leaders
for the event to mark the official opening of the new environmental
building.
Expected to be the first city hall in Canada with Gold
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, the $30
million project was completed on time and on budget and was accomplished
using finances from the settlement of a loan with the city’s hydro
utility. The funding model resulted in no new tax dollars or the need to
borrow for the municipality.
Minister Gerretsen commented: “Tonight we are
recognizing a new landmark in our province—and even more than that, we are
recognizing a huge step forward for Cambridge and for all of Ontario.” He
added further that, “With the opening of your new City Hall, you’re
encouraging public institutions and businesses across the province to also
go above and beyond…and raise environmental protection to new heights.”
